Halekūlani Bakery in Waikīkī is now open daily. If you love the famous coconut cake from Halekūlani—and trust us, if you’ve ever had it, you’d love it—now you can get it any day of the week without having to dine at the iconic Waikīkī hotel. Halekūlani Bakery, which first opened in 2019, serves artisanal breads, pastries, croissants and, yes, the hotel’s coconut cake (whole or by the slice), all freshly baked on site.

It’s an accepted set of seven principles—a mantra in national parks and other protected outdoor spaces—that remind visitors to minimize their impact on the environment. One of those principles can directly be applied to national parks in Hawai‘i: Leave what you find.

The beloved Kaua‘i Bakery in Līhu‘e hasn't changed much over the years, and that's just the way the new owners like it. Tiana Sudaria grew up going to Kaua‘i Bakery. Her favorite was always the bakery’s oversize cinnamon rolls. And every family birthday featured its guava chiffon cake. When she and her husband, Dante, heard it might be shutting down, they weren’t having it. An institution like Kaua‘i Bakery can’t close, they said. So they bought it.

Well known in Japan, First Cabin will open its first U.S. property in Spring 2025. If you’ve even planned a trip to Japan, you might have stumbled on something called “capsule hotels,” or kapuseru hoteru in Japanese. These are pod-style rooms, just big enough for a bed, meant for quick and cheap overnight stays. Amenities such as toilets, showers and dining rooms are communal. Like hostels but way nicer—and more private.
