The New York State Department of Transportation reopened Route 56 between Colton and Tupper Lake on Tuesday evening. The DOT had shut it down in early March after a sinkhole opened up on the road. The culvert at the Raquette River Tributary had failed. It was nearly 100 years old. Construction crews have installed a new and larger concrete box culvert and reconstructed the road.

North Country farms are busy in springtime. Produce farmers are starting seedtrays of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers; livestock farmers are caring for new calves, kids and lambs; and fruit growers are wrapping up pruning as trees start to blossom. The closed stretch of highway between Stark Road and Sevey Road on Route 56 could reopen as early as Tuesday, according to the state Department of Transportation. The highway is the main road between the Canton-Potsdam area and Tupper Lake. It's been closed since March 1, after a plow driver noticed a hole in the road about five miles north of Seveys Corners.

Each year, dozens of young people come to the Adirondacks for internships or other temporary work. Some of them may want to stay, but find it hard to plug into the small and far-flung communities. A new group called Adirondack Midstory is trying to help them get a toe-hold here. One of its founders, Jess Grant, said it all started in 2021, at a party hosted by the Northern Forest Center for interns and summer workers across the Adirondacks. "There were so many people there.
