North Country Public Radio is a regional radio network that is part of National Public Radio, based in Canton, New York. This network, which relies on support from its members, is owned by St. Lawrence University and serves as the NPR affiliate for the Adirondack North Country area of northern New York. The studios are housed in the Noble Medical Building on the university campus.

    If you've ever gone hiking in the Adirondack wilderness, you may have seen old, dead trees that have fallen into streams and are decomposing. That wood has captured and is storing carbon. Researchers from the University of Vermont studied the carbon storage capacity of dead wood in streams in the Adirondacks and New Hampshire and how it can serve as a natural climate solution.

    It’s graduation season in the North Country. Last Saturday, about 800 students from both Clarkson University and SUNY Canton received their diplomas. SUNY Adirondack celebrated about 500 new graduates in Glens Falls on Saturday, while about 180 students graduated from Paul Smith’s College. North Country Community College is awarding pins to new nurses in Malone and Ticonderoga on Wednesday and Saranac Lake on Thursday. The college-wide graduation is this Saturday.

    Fort Ticonderoga officially kicked off its celebration of the country’s 250th anniversary this weekend. Multiple events commemorated the Green Mountain Boys’ 1775 capture of the fort, the first major victory in the American Revolution. At a news conference Friday, Fort Ticonderoga Association President/CEO Beth Hill said it was pivotal because the Americans took control of the British garrison’s cannons. “The Americans didn't have the technology to make their own cannon," Hill explained.
