In Slovenian, “Mati” means mother, and Matjaž chose this name for his business to symbolize the unconditional love for the earth and all that it nurtures, specifically truffles. We were in the Horjul region near-ish to the restaurant Grič, where we would have a truffle tasting lunch, just west of the capital city, Ljubljana.

We arrived at Triple Creek Ranch at dusk, just as the snow began to shimmer. White lights buried beneath snow-covered pine boughs glowed. Up ahead, the grand Main Lodge was a welcome sight. After my journey–a delayed flight and a rough connection, arriving at Triple Creek Ranch, I felt like a cowhand being welcomed to the Big House. The hugs from my friends and a lovely glass of wine were a homecoming to a place I’d never been.

Once, Katherine asked me, “What was your happiest moment?” I can’t remember what I said. I think it was a family Thanksgiving vacation in Barcelona, far away from eating turkey but close to Gaudi. Katherine’s happiest moment was a deep powder day, making turns down a run at Alta Ski Resort in Utah. Most advanced skiers know the feeling. It’s like your chest is full of monarch butterflies, and your mind is free from thought, although you may be humming a tune. For me, I feel supremely thankful.
