The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats, is the OG, undisputed, definitive picture book about winter’s first flurries, but here’s another one I love …Where I live, this week was the first big snow of the year. It was the kind of winter storm that puts the whole house on high alert hoping for a school closure. It sent me to the way back corner of the garage, hunting for the snow shovel. And it kicked off my annual tiff with my husband about whether we have enough rock salt. Him: We’re good.

The English-language manga market is dominated by teen and adult series, but middle graders and younger kids want their manga, too, and they don’t have enough to choose from. Things are beginning to change, if slowly, and American publishers are playing a key role. In October, Scholastic announced that it would add manga to its Graphix imprint.

This illustration for the Shakespeare Translator was made with the generative AI software Midjourney. A few creators riffed off one another’s concepts on a shared Midjourney server. The file was initiated with prompts (“William Shakespeare sitting at a crappy modern Denny’s diner,” as well as “Victorian painting,” “Studio Ghibli,” and others). The team then refined concepts to arrive at the final version.
