From Bill “Bojangles” Robinson to Savion Glover, tap dance is a uniquely American art form. And tap is the star of the show in the latest production from Sarasota’s Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe called Syncopated Avenue. For the final production of its 25th anniversary season, the company is telling the story of a retired African-American tap dancer whose dance studio is threatened by development, and the community that rallies behind him.

“Ode to Joy" the final movement from Beethoven's Ninth, was the first major symphony to add a chorus. Before 1824, no symphony had done so. Joseph Caulkins, Key Chorale's artistic director, says it's Beethoven's most celebratory — and recognized piece. "People who don't know classical music at all know that piece. It's really become a part of western civilization, probably unlike any other piece of classical music,” he said.

A century ago, Florida was the nation's top cattle producer. In 2022, The Great Florida Cattle Drive honored the state's vanishing industry. The reenactment was the fourth time in almost 30 years that the Florida Cow Culture Preservation Committee staged the event to remind people of the state's history. WUSF's Cathy Carter recently spoke with a drive participant, journalist Isaac Eger. He's out with a new book about the 80-mile journey through what's left of Florida's ranchlands.
