TAMPA, Fla. — Tens of thousands of people poured into downtown Tampa for Special Operations Forces (SOF) Week. The weeklong event culminated Thursday night with the U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) awards ceremony and dinner. The most prestigious award and USSOCOM’s highest honor, the Bull Simons Lifetime Achievement Award, was awarded to retired U.S. Army Special Forces Lt. Col. Lewis H. Burruss Jr. and retired U.S. Air Force Colonel Larry Ropka.

TAMPA, Fla. — The Diocese of St. Petersburg said Monday that Christ the King Catholic Church was the victim of a complex financial crime. A church and Diocese of St. Petersburg spokesperson said a former employee stole $775,000 from its parish operating account over the last five months. 10 Tampa Bay is not naming the person in question because charges have not yet been filed.

TAMPA, Fla. — A Transportation Security Administration spokesperson said its investigators are looking into how a checked bag with a loaded handgun inside almost made it onto an airplane at Tampa International Airport. The agency confirmed the checked bag made it through a security screening Tuesday morning and it was not flagged for further investigation before ground operations employees discovered it for JetBlue Airways.

TAMPA, Fla. — Third- and fourth-grade students at St. John’s Episcopal Parish Day School spent several hours on Tuesday packing 12,500 meals that will feed 347 children in Haiti each for an entire school year. The Florida-based organization, Rise Against Hunger, provides everything needed for impact events like this. All one has to do is get a team together and pay for the food. Each packet costs 41 cents. Inside the school’s parish hall, a gong rings out.

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. — If your electric vehicle is submerged in saltwater flooding, it is a fire hazard. That is the dangerous lesson learned in the hours and days after Hurricane Ian made landfall in 2022 and again in 2023 following Hurricane Idalia. There were 20 electric vehicle battery fires related to damage from Hurricane Ian and three related to Hurricane Idalia, according to Florida CFO Jimmy Patronis who oversees the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
