    Mohamed Samura, a freshman computer information systems major from Fredericksburg, Virginia, has diedafter being struck by a car last week in front of Cook Hall, according to the university. Samura was hit by a faculty member driving a car on Aug. 11 and was admitted to the Howard University Hospital shortly thereafter.

    Reports of a barricaded person near the Howard Hospital on the 900 block of U Street North West around 9 a.m. this morning led to increased police presence around the area, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. A Howard University Bison Safe advisory message was sent to students at that time to stay clear from Georgia Avenue and Florida Avenue, which are near campus.

    For the past 40 years, the U.S. News & World Report has been ranking colleges and universities across the country. For the 2024 academic year, Howard ranks 115th in national universities, 26 spots lower than last year, prompting members of the Howard community to question the credibility of these rankings. Howard’s Chief Academic Officer and Provost Dr. Anthony K. Wutoh said the reasoning behind the university’s significant drop in rank is due to a new metric system used by the company.

    Immediately following last week’s 2023 Opening Convocation, the university held a cookout on the Yard where members of the Howard community chatted and took pictures with President Ben Vinson III. Students and faculty also gave their initial reactions to his convocation speech. The Sept. 16 cookout included numerous activities and indulgences, among them cartoon drawings of students, zap-a-mole, a wide selection of barbecued foods, and an address to attendees from Vinson.
