Eastern Iowa braces for more storms following Easter downpour

Monday's sunshine brought a chance for eastern Iowa to dry out a bit after the heavy rainfall on Easter Sunday. Many cities picked up well over an inch of rainfall. Cedar Rapids recorded a total of 2.34". An active and mild weather pattern is setting up for the rest of the week with chances for rainfall almost every day until the weekend.

EASTERN IOWA (Iowa's News Now) — A mixed bag of weather is in store for the holiday weekend with cooler temperatures and widespread rain expected on Eastern Sunday. We will start with some clouds in the morning on Saturday but there will be more sunshine in the afternoon as high pressure builds in. Temperatures will be in the 50s and low 60s. Clouds will build back in Sunday morning as a low pressure system draws closer to the area. Temperatures will be even cooler in the low 50s.

After a couple of quiet days this week (besides the wind), storms chances are back in the forecast late Thursday. Late Wednesday night and Thursday morning a warm front will be setting up across the state. A few showers and even a storm may develop in eastern Iowa Thursday morning. Severe storms are not expected but some small hail and lightning will be possible. Some of these showers and storms may linger later into the morning before exiting the state to the northeast.

IOWA (Iowa's News Now) — Monday marks two years since the largest tornado outbreak eastern Iowa has ever seen in the month of March. In 2023, Iowa saw a total of 72 tornadoes on the year. A third of those tornadoes occurred two years ago on March 31, 2023. The event on March 31st was by far the most impressive severe weather event of the year, with a total of 25 tornadoes touching down on the day. Almost all of these tornadoes occurred in eastern Iowa.

EASTERN IOWA (Iowa's News Now) — What a way to start the new week across eastern Iowa. Temperatures were running far above normal with many hometowns hitting 70 degrees for the first time this year. Temperature records were broken in Waterloo and Cedar Rapids on Monday. EASTERN IOWA (Iowa's News Now) — There hasn't been much to complain about weather wise this week. Temperatures have been 50 degrees or above since Sunday in Cedar Rapids, around 15 to 20 degrees above normal for this time of the year. There will be some changes over the next few days with a risk for fire weather on Friday and cooler air moving in this weekend. Winds were strong on Thursday with some gusts over 40 mph. Winds will be even stronger on Friday with some gusts near 50 mph.
