    The Labour party has been reduced to 20 councillors out of 48 in the Oxford City Council as the Greens and the Independent Oxford Alliance made gains in extremely tight local elections. The developments in Oxford come amidst a resounding defeat for the Conservatives nationwide, who are expected to lose half of their seats up for election. A total of 25 councillor seats were up for election this year, two in the ward of Blackbird Leys and one in every other.

    On March 28th in a dingy Manhattan courtroom, unrepentant crypto-mogul Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison. This landmark sentence came after an appeal by his lawyers against Bankman-Fried’s conviction in November 2023 on seven counts of wire fraud and conspiracy to launder money. MIT-educated Bankman-Fried was co-founder CEO of crypto exchange FTX, which was the 3rd biggest such exchange at its peak.

    The Oxford Union has released a report detailing the judgements of a tribunal that considered seven allegations of electoral malpractice. The tribunal upheld the results of the election and found no evidence of electoral interference by the Returning Officers (ROs). In the course of the investigations, both President-elect Ebrahim Osman-Mowafy and candidate Chris Collins were found guilty of making “vexatious claims” against the other and fined £100.

    Cherwell has investigated allegations that a secret slate coordinated endorsements across various SU campaigns – a tactic that is strictly forbidden by the SU. This follows the SU Campaign Class Act having to withdraw its endorsements due to “a degree of unfairness” in the endorsement process and the President-Elect, Addi Haran, stating that she was asked by the newly elected VP for Welfare, Alfie Davis, to join a slate which Davis described as a group of “anti-union white queers” last October.
