NHL The Edmonton Oilers 4-2 win over the Seattle Kraken last night means that they've finally crossed the 41-game threshold along with the rest of the NHL, and that means we're right around the halfway mark in the 2023-24 season. What better way to mark the occasion than by handing out some hypothetical hardware in the form of NHL awards, as voted on by the EP Rinkside staff?

Draft and Prospect Analytics Scouting for the amateur draft is an incredibly difficult exercise for a whole host of reasons. One of the most well-documented ones is the relative age effect (RAE for short). Summed up, the idea is that within any given age cohort, relatively older individuals tend to hold an advantage over their younger peers. This has been observed almost everywhere it's been studied, including within hockey and other sports along with standardized test scores in school.

NHL Prospects Recently, I unveiled a new metric called NHLz, one that I built to help better measure the quality of respective NHL feeder leagues. The way NHLz works is that it uses scoring, as measured by era adjusted points per game in each hockey league, to estimate the strength of 100 different leagues around the world relative to the NHL.

Over the weekend I updated the our website’s database and ran the forecasts for this years NHL draft class. The models five favorite players were in order:Connor BedardMatvei MichkovAdam FantilliLeo CarlssonWill SmithScorching hot take to have the consensus 5 best players atop the list I know I know. But I did notice something interesting when creating these projections. Looking back this year seems to be an almost unprecedented draft class.
