April 12, 2023 Commodores open NCAA Championship on Friday in Las Vegas by Rod Williamson NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt has reached the NCAA’s Final Four and will play Arkansas State at 11 a.m. CT Friday in the first round of the double-elimination competition. Nebraska, the defending national champion, and McKendree meet in the other semifinal at the same time on the other side of the bracket. The second round matches are at 5 p.m. CT.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Asked what the biggest lesson is that he’ll take away from his weeklong Masters Tournament experience, Gordon Sargent paused for a bit, then grinned. “Pro golf is harder than college golf,” he said. Sargent, the reigning NCAA individual national champion, saw his trip to Augusta National Golf Club end Friday after a second-round score of 76.

AUGUSTA, Ga. — The third day at the Augusta National Golf Club ended much better for Gordon Sargent than the second day began. On Sunday, the Vanderbilt sophomore arrived at the historic golf venue to continue preparing for this week’s Masters Tournament. He wasn’t immediately allowed into the players’ dining room. “Nobody believed me,” Sargent told WTFV-TV on Monday. Those watching Sargent on Monday, however, have no doubt about what they witnessed.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — As the legend goes, it was a frozen steak Carter Holton put on his swollen eye after taking a baseball to the face. Truth be told, his parents said, it was a bag of frozen butter beans. That detail, however, isn’t the most important aspect of this anecdote. “Before he finished crying and he was still wiping tears from his face, we were playing catch again,” said Carl Holton, Carter’s father. It was then, Carl added, that he and Carter’s mother, Dawn, knew that Carter was different.
