For the first time, Letterboxd partnered with the Locarno Film Festival this year to do what we do best: celebrate movies. We voted for the very first Letterboxd Piazza Grande Award, which was won by Gaucho Gaucho (more on them very soon). But! We also spent a glorious two weeks in the Swiss haven, watching pictures under the stars and meeting filmmaking legends from all around the world.

They say that death takes many forms. In “Tuesday,” a new magical realist drama brought to you by A24, it takes the shape of a talking macaw. Helmed by first-time writer-director Daina O. Pusić, “Tuesday” premiered at the 2023 Telluride Film Festival in 2023 and opens in Canada on Friday. The movie is an emotional two-hander about a teenager with a deadly illness named Tuesday (British actress Lola Petticrew).

While accepting the Golden Globe for Best International Feature Film in 2019, Parasitedirector Bong Joon-ho famously said, “Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films.” A few weeks later, the director would go on to accept the Oscar for Best Picture, the first time in the history of the Academy that a non-English-language film took the ceremony’s main prize. Subtitles are not new to cinema.
