The UK government’s £3bn ‘apprenticeship budget’, aimed at support apprentices aged 16 to 21, has been hailed as “really good news for young people”, though the CIPD called for “a more ambitious approach”. The government announced yesterday (27 May) that it will defund postgraduate-level (Level 7) apprenticeships from January 2026, add 32% to the amount that employers pay to recruit from outside the UK, and redirect resources to support apprentices aged 16 to 21.

Employers who offer defined benefit pension schemes are now eligible to achieve 'living pension' accreditation, the Living Wage Foundation charity announced today (28 May). Similar to the living wage, an hourly rate of pay calculated by the Living Wage Foundation, which takes the cost of living into account, the living pension is a voluntary savings target for employers, to ensure that workers’ pension pots will provide enough income to meet basic everyday needs in retirement.

“January doesn’t have to be dry,” according to an email subject line written by a marketer after my own heart (and my cash). But the fact remains that for many, this time of the year is a real slog. We’re meant to be full of hopes and new-year aspirations. People are starting new jobs, and looking for fresh opportunities. It’s “new year, new you” season. I am probably meant to be post-Christmas pumped and powered up to kickstart the year.
