MANCHESTER – The fallout shelter signs available for sale in Green Peak Elements are new old stock. Manufactured more than 60 years ago for the federal government, they were never affixed to the sides of schools and other public buildings to demarcate where citizens could go in the event of a nuclear conflict.

MANCHESTER — Nathan and Katerine Halle live just outside Manchester, in New Hampshire. Earlier this month, while on vacation, the husband and wife made their first visit to the Manchester in Vermont. After spending time browsing in various stores, they went inside The Maple Reserve, a café at 4927 Main St., because Nathan Halle was looking for something sweet. “I got the maple ice cream,” he said. “It was pretty damned good.”His wife ordered an iced coffee. They sat at the counter.

Many of them are skiers, and the spouse-owners of the business know there is no better location than the small building with the sloped roof at 36 Vermont Route 30. It is across the street from the access road to the Stratton Mountain Resort. “See that?” Rob Willis said, as he pointed out a window in a room decorated with a Christmas tree.
