The Minnesota Vikings seem to have done everything possible to prepare J.J. McCarthy as their starting quarterback next season, including eliminating the threat of competition. The threat was eliminated with the recent signing of Sam Howell as McCarthy’s backup. Had the Vikings signed, for instance, a veteran such as Kirk Cousins, it could have made an uncomfortable situation for McCarthy. Howell, 24, has much to prove to warrant consideration as starter.

The Gophers’ search for its next men’s basketball coach appears to have a frontrunner: Niko Medved of Colorado State, the Pioneer Press has heard this week. No announcement from the U is imminent. Medved is from Minnesota and has deep ties to the U. The 51-year-old coach is currently in his seventh season at Colorado State, where he is 140-84 and has made two NCAA Tournament appearances. The Rams (24-9) will play Boise State in the Mountain West Tournament championship game Saturday evening.
