The Gophers’ search for its next men’s basketball coach appears to have a frontrunner: Niko Medved of Colorado State, the Pioneer Press has heard this week. No announcement from the U is imminent. Medved is from Minnesota and has deep ties to the U. The 51-year-old coach is currently in his seventh season at Colorado State, where he is 140-84 and has made two NCAA Tournament appearances. The Rams (24-9) will play Boise State in the Mountain West Tournament championship game Saturday evening.

It looks like money may have been a factor in Seattle’s trade of quarterback Geno Smith to the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday, opening the way for Vikings free agent Sam Darnold to possibly end up with the Seahawks. The Seahawks wouldn’t have traded Smith without feeling strongly that next Wednesday they could sign Darnold, clearly the top free agent QB on the market. Darnold is 27. Smith is 34. Smith is under contract for $31 million next season.

The guess here is that Sam Darnold will end up with the Los Angeles Raiders. The Raiders, 4-13 this season, are desperate for a quarterback and under new coach Pete Carroll, who turns 74 early next season, intend to be competitive as soon as they can. The Raiders have the No. 6 pick in an underwhelming quarterback draft in April. Among the Raiders’ QB options, Darnold makes the most sense.

Not because it isn’t true; after all, who wouldn’t want a bright, young (39) coach whose teams are 34-18 in his first three seasons? But distressed because it was leaked to a credible NFL reporter, Jay Glazer, of Fox Sports last week on national TV. The report should not be dismissed.
