Former student journalists who filed a lawsuit against Western Washington University for violating public records law have used some of the settlement earnings to establish an investigative journalism fund at Western. Last year, Western was penalized for withholding sexual assault records, the result of a lawsuit filed by alumni Erasmus Baxter, Asia Fields and Julia Furukawa. The three alumni were awarded $111,780.

One Whatcom County elementary school is seeing growth in students’ reading skills after making some significant changes to its teaching approach. Irene Reither Elementary in the Meridian School District saw a 129% median growth in student reading proficiency last year, the highest in several years, said Principal Tyler Dockins.

For 20 years, the legacy of Indigenous activist and author Vine Deloria Jr. has brought scholars and community members from around the country to Northwest Indian College on the Lummi Reservation. It’s something Deloria dreamed up during one of his last public appearances at the college in summer 2005, before he died that November: He wanted to see Northwest Indian College host a yearly Indigenous Studies symposium. Now, two decades later, the event has grown.

As Whatcom Community College faces down a projected $3.8 million deficit, some classes, and potentially some staff positions, are on the chopping block. The shortfall stems from several factors, including “state budget reductions, partially funded legislative mandates, rising costs and enrollment,” said Public Information Officer Marni Saling Mayer. Enrollment has been increasing in recent years, now at 3,078 full-time enrollments, but it remains 700 below pre-pandemic levels.

BURLINGTON — It’s lunchtime at the Salish Sea Deaf School, and all the students, from pre-K to eighth grade, are sitting together at an oval table. They’re giggling and smiling as they eat their lunches, communicating with each other using mostly American Sign Language. For most of these students, hanging out and interacting with their peers by themselves is not an experience they could get in mainstream public schools, where they would communicate with others through an interpreter.

LYNDEN — Devin Luna, one of the main organizers of a transgender student support rally at the Lynden School District on Thursday, May 15, came out to a school counselor when she was a student at Lynden High School. But the 2022 graduate told the school board, she quickly “took it back,” because she said Lynden is “hostile” to transgender people like her.
