    Last year, Bellingham resident Morgan Foster wanted to know the outcome of a consequential school board vote in a nearby district. Taken aback by the tone and tenor of the discussions regarding Title IX, Foster called the nearby district and then clicked through the website, eventually finding an MP3 file of the meeting. She listened to the “fuzzy recording” for two hours to get her answer. Foster thought there had to be a simpler way to find out what was going on in local school districts.

    Volunteers and residents of two Bellingham tiny home villages are building new homes this week, as the communities prepare to combine and relocate to city property on Northwest Avenue. The new village will be called North Haven — a combination of two existing HomesNOW! tiny home villages. Swift Haven in the Puget neighborhood and Unity Village in Fairhaven provide emergency shelter to about 50 residents who would otherwise be homeless. The relocation is expected to happen in May.

    The average gas price in Bellingham has risen 30 cents over the last month, according to AAA. Regular gas is averaging $4.37 a gallon, up from $4.07 a gallon recorded a month ago. However, costs still remain below the average a year ago of $4.64 per gallon, and below the highest recorded average price of $5.54 per gallon in October 2022. Current increases are likely due to refinery maintenance and the summer-blend gasoline switch, according to AAA.

    Olga Tsakhniv, 14, spends most of her time at Shuksan Middle School in class with her peers. But for the last period every day, she goes to the school office, sits on a couch and completes her language arts class online.  For Tsakhniv, it’s “calming” to complete her final class in a quiet space with no distractions. Previously, she felt overwhelmed by a full day of classes in a building of nearly 700 people and would often leave school before the day was up, said Principal Alli Chryst.
