The body of the first New Zealander killed in Ukraine nearly three years ago is finally being returned home. Dominic Abelen was killed in August 2022 while fighting in the East of Ukraine on leave without pay from the Defence Force. He was working to take over a Russian trench line in the Vuhledar region when he was wounded and died in battle. The soldier's body ended up in Russian hands after his team came under intense fire while trying to retrieve him.

A series of aircraft breakdowns and bad weather left 12 Defence Force staff stranded in Antarctica for a month with a rapidly closing window to get out before winter. Crew on a Hercules aircraft finally managed to fly them home on 17 April as part of a medical evacuation for an American at McMurdo Station. That was four weeks after they were supposed to leave. ACT Party Defence spokesperson Mark Cameron said if it had not been for that flight they would have been stuck there even longer.

New Zealand passports are going to take longer to process with recent system upgrades. Photo / Mark MitchellBy Charlotte Cook of RNZNew Zealanders are being warned to apply for new passports at least two months before they need them. Current advice from the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) is that people should allow eight weeks, plus delivery, for a standard passport to be issued. The extended wait times are being blamed on upgrades to the passport system and increased seasonal demand.

The government was warned Yemeni civilians could be killed in an operation in which New Zealand is involved to protect shipping in the Red Sea. The coalition announced in January that the Defence Force would be sending a team of six to take part in the United States-led strikes against the Houthis and provide maritime security in the area.

Trying to get to a tangi tomorrow, as I was trying to book @interislander fares DOUBLED in front of my eyes. Customer service tells me they don't do compassionate fares and this is just the price... and despite the screenshots I have of the original cost - they can't match it.
