If I were a lesser critic than I wish to be, I would use the title of this film as an opportunity to sardonically riff on how it’s anything but. There is, sadly, truth to such a sentiment; Opus, the feature directorial debut of one Mark Anthony Green, is safely one of the creakiest films in the entirety of A24‘s library, and especially far from what it ostensibly styles itself as — not an opus, per se, but a revelatory finger on what I would call a crucial pulse.

Steven Soderbergh and David Koepp are two of cinema’s good guys. The former, a journeyman of a director who’s been drawn to a myriad of subjects and styles, all of them bearing the common denominator of inventiveness. The latter, screenwriting royalty who many of us have to thank for recent yet foundational genre and blockbuster work (Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man? Spielberg’s Jurassic Park? That was him).

Fantasy has had no easy time of things on screen lately. Warrior Nun‘s survival depended on one of the most massive fan campaigns this side of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Harry Potter spinoffs haven’t kept up momentum even as a somewhat-dreaded television adaptation gets cooked up, and The Rings of Power has hardly been doing Peter Jackson’s original LOTR trilogy any favors, to put it politely.

Whenever the Oscars swing around, one of the quieter questions is whether the ceremony will go off without a hitch or not. This year’s ceremony has been chugging along pretty smoothly — complete with Conan O’Brien’s apparent new beef with the entire country of Estonia — but it might need to do a better job of vetting its distributors next time.

The Brutalist, Emilia Pérez, and Conclave have all vied for the frontrunner position at different points in time, Mikey Madison and Demi Moore have tangoed in the Best Actress pool over these last few months, and Timothée Chalamet’s SAG Award win the other night has shaken up the Best Actor race significantly.
