After weeks of dry weather, South Florida is preparing for the other extreme: periods of heavy rain. And that much-needed rainfall started Tuesday afternoon. A few showers started to pop up out west in the Everglades and briefly in Palmetto Bay shortly after 1 p.m. Then, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of Miami-Dade County until 2:45 p.m. A wind gust of 60 mph and small hail was detected in that storm. A fire tornado or a "firenado" can form within wildfires when the flames heat up the air, causing the surrounding air and smoke to rise very rapidly. Tornadoes are classified by a rotating column of air that reaches down from the cloud to the ground.

A cold front has been moving through the country over the last few days sparking up strong and severe storms. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) was able to put the caution out for the severe weather outbreak four to six days in advance. The SPC issued a rare "high" risk (5/5) for Saturday, on Friday. The day before, the storms hit the southeast. This is rare to issue the highest rating for severe threats the day before, it has only happened two other times.

It's a dreary start to the day with clouds and rain around South Florida. Temperatures are in the mid-60s and will fall a few more degrees before we warm up after sunrise. It'll stay cool today with highs remaining in the upper 60s under clouds and bouts of rain. A front is stalled across the area and this will keep us with the rain chances today and into the evening hours. By tomorrow, the boundary shifts just enough that we see more dry time, but the chance for rain remains.
