Climate change has made South Florida's rainy, heat and hurricane seasons all much more dangerous. When it comes to rain, we are seeing more and more frequent intense rainfalls; a larger amount of rain in a shorter period of time. In 2023, several 6" rain events plus a lot of smaller events added up to a record-shattering 113.61" in Fort Lauderdale. The biggest event was on April 12th, 2023, when we saw two feet of rain.

After weeks of dry weather, South Florida is preparing for the other extreme: periods of heavy rain. And that much-needed rainfall started Tuesday afternoon. A few showers started to pop up out west in the Everglades and briefly in Palmetto Bay shortly after 1 p.m. Then, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of Miami-Dade County until 2:45 p.m. A wind gust of 60 mph and small hail was detected in that storm. After weeks of dry weather, South Florida will prepare for the other extreme: periods of heavy rain. We are anticipating much-needed rainfall across the region Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night. You'll notice a warm and muggy start to your day with partly cloudy skies. Winds Tuesday will remain out of the southeast, priming the atmosphere with ample moisture. The cause of the inclement weather will be a disturbance that will cross the area, leading to periods of heavy rainfall.

A fire weather watch is in effect across South Florida until 7 p.m. Thursday, after the passage of Wednesday night's front left the air bone dry. It is also quite gusty, as wind gusts are coming in close to 25 mph. This combination of low humidity, lack of rain and gusty winds has prompted a fire weather watch, meaning that "any fire that develops could catch and spread quickly. Outdoor burning is not recommended," the National Weather Service says. Fire in Fort Lauderdale today?

The long holiday weekend is here, and temperatures on both Saturday and Sunday will be well above average and downright summer-like. By Sunday, daytime highs in Miami will come close to tying the record of 88 degrees; our forecast high is 86. But change is near - a cold front will work through South Florida on Sunday night into Monday, ushering in seasonable temperatures as well as a few spotty showers.
