Short dark days; rain, fog and sleet; night times huddling around a heater with gale warnings in the marine forecast; these things don’t matter at all to a certain brand of boater who puts up with winter in order to enjoy other pleasures. Pleasures likethe solitude they can find on the water when all the wimpy cruisers are home by the fire. Or the pleasure of being able to snug into their favourite anchorages and moorages knowing that no reservations are necessary.

“Can we anchor just off here?” I call back to the skipper from my location at Aquila’s bow. I love dropping the hook within view of that gorgeous white shell beach at Russell Island’s western end. “Where else?” smiles the helmsman. “OK let her go.

If your boat leaves a large wake, you always give smaller craft a wide berth and slow down, right? You always give way to the stand-on vessel and to boats under sail, don’t you? You’re mindful of the noise of your generator and try to minimize disturbance in quiet anchorages, agree? You have your PCOC and know the “rules of the road” and you carry your charts and tide tables and know how to use them, correct?

In the early hours of February 23, 1998, those of us who were living close to Hope Bay awoke to the alarming sound of sirens and the fiery glow sparking over the trees. The venerable Hope Bay General Store was ablaze, and while the volunteer firefighters were able to contain it, they couldn’t save the structure. Rising from the ashes, however, was not new to Hope Bay. It had done it before and it would do it again.
