The U.S. Supreme Court announced Friday it will hear an appeal from convicted former Ald. Patrick Daley Thompson, signaling more close scrutiny of federal prosecutions in Chicago and across the country. A jury found Thompson guilty in February 2022 of two counts of lying to regulators and five counts of filing false income tax returns. U.S. District Judge Franklin Valderrama sentenced the heir to the Daley political dynasty to four months in prison.

A federal judge on Wednesday declined to dismiss criminal charges leveled against former Illinois House Speaker Michael J. Madigan involving an alleged bribery scheme at ComEd, despite a U.S. Supreme Court ruling this summer that threatened the feds’ case against the powerful former politician. U.S. District Judge John Blakey’s ruling came down less than a week before Madigan is set to face trial, and less than an hour before a status hearing in the high-profile case.

In Chicago, if you were to be shot today - you’d be more likely to die from your injuries than you would have been 13 years ago. That’s the finding of a new report from nonprofit news outlet The Trace. It’s a stunning reversal of long-term trends, in which faster response times and better medical care had for years improved the chances of surviving a gunshot.
