Apparently Alaska loves its cruise ships as much as they love the 49th state. As the Alaska cruise season begins to ramp up, voters in Sitka last week followed the precedent of their neighbors in Juneau and voted to allow cruise ship tourism to continue as is.

Apparently not content to be upgrading its private islands, Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Cruises brand this week offered details of a giant shopping list it has compiled to upgrade its five Solstice-class ships, beginning with Celebrity Solstice next year. Celebrity will spend more than $250 million to upgrade its Solstice Series ships, adding new décor in every stateroom on Celebrity Solstice and eight new spaces before the ship sails off for Asia, Alaska and then a world tour in 2026.

In a sure hint of crowded skies ahead and an effort to maintain on-time arrivals, United Airlines is asking domestic travelers to leave for the airport a few minutes earlier this summer. Starting June 3, it will require passengers to be through check-in 45 minutes before departure, whether they are checking a bag or not (Airport Process | United Airlines), and whether or not they are at their gate. International travelers must be checked in 60 minutes in advance.
