If you’re planning to sail Pride of America, hurry up. A new tax in Hawaii will add 11% to its fare beginning January 1. Both houses of the Hawaiian Legislature last week passed the state’s first-ever tax on cruise ship passengers, in a bill that increased the transient accommodations tax for hotels and included ships for the first time. Governor Josh Green has indicated support for the bill in the past and is expected to sign it into law.

It wasn’t only about big ships at the annual Seatrade show in Miami this month. Also on the agenda were lots of new ships rolling out in much smaller dimensions. Even as it made a splash with the 6,000-passenger MSC World America, MSC Cruises said it is on course to add four ships to its luxury lifestyle brand, Explora Journeys. Holding less than 1,000 passengers each, EXPLORA III and EXPLORA IV will double its fleet from two to four ships by 2028.
