Steph Curry walked gingerly off the court during a timeout and went straight to the locker room a few minutes into the second quarter. The Golden State Warriors led the Timberwolves by 10 points at that moment in Game 1. The final margin of victory Tuesday night at Target Center was 11 points, meaning the Warriors outscored the Wolves by one point without their superstar available the rest of the game. That should serve as a lesson for what lies ahead in the Western Conference semifinals.

The asterisk finally disappears, as do all those "yeah but" disclaimers. The season is over, and the Wild will no longer be confined by salary cap shackles. May we never bring up the Parise-Suter buyouts ever again. Time to move forward. Expectations will be different now. President of Hockey Ops Bill Guerin stands on equal footing with peers in constructing a roster this offseason and he and coach John Hynes should be judged accordingly.

The Timberwolves needed the better part of the NBA's regular season to figure out who they are, how they fit and what another blockbuster trade meant to the overall dynamics. As maddening as it was to watch at times, cohesion doesn't always come in lickety-split order. The result of that process is why Wolves fans should feel optimistic after watching the team dispatch the Los Angeles Lakers in five games to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

The Wild's deeply unsatisfying playoff history is littered with squandered opportunities and a litany of would've, could've, should've laments. They added another doozy to the ledger Tuesday night. This one will be harder to swallow than others if the Wild don't pick themselves off the canvas and win the next two games to keep their season alive. And Gustav Nyquist will become a trivia answer in the Minnesota sports history of heartbreak if the season ends with another first-round playoff exit.
