In these times of sensorial overload, algorithmic and encoded bias, and predictive analytics determined by suits in boardrooms, Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons turn to what American cultural critic Susan Sontag termed a ‘flight from interpretation.’Before the collection, a quick note on the primal notion: in circa 300 BCE, Greek philosopher Plato introduced the example of a pre-textual person, unaware of what exists outside of the cave: their hermetic environment.

Thoughts spring out of Campbell Addy and Ibby Njoya like slinkies, new from the plastic box. One mentions a drawing class, the other references a university; one says “what” and the other asks “why?”; one poses a theoretical problem and the other offers a pragmatic solution. Their dialogue is meandering and chaotic, making it all the more difficult for a third-wheeler to follow along. There are some clear throughlines nonetheless. The first is that collaboration is an essential part of creating art.

It was a fitting departure; Slimane was hired in 2018 with an explicit mandate to double profits for the house. In the collection, one sees some of the signature traits underlying his striking commercial success: refined, timeless designs with a salient emphasis on wearability. The show eschewed showstoppers and gimmicks for pieces that were versatile and poignantly cool.

Labelled the “next big thing”, Taburet has become known as the young edgy artist with a love for horror movies and trap music. Riley Orange: Have you exhibited at Backwoods Gallery before? Josh Robins: I’ve been in a couple of group shows here. One straight out of lockdown. It was a show of 300 small typographic pieces that related to our experience at that time. RO: When I was looking through your work, I wondered about your relationship with memory. You seem to be interested in the idea of shifting perspectives. JR: I sort of laugh every time I read that these days. Everyone seems to be working on memory.
