With a handful of new players mixing things up and championing all things Tasmanian, there’s never been a better time to eat your way around Australia’s southernmost capital. While the pace of life elsewhere on the Apple Isle might still (mercifully) be as sleepy as ever, the Hobart food scene has kicked up a gear in recent years, with hyper-seasonal produce at the forefront.

Drink a dram of estate-grown rye on the very farm where it was grown and made, or try a nip of multi-award-winning sheep’s whey vodka while overlooking the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. Tasmania’s cachet as a gourmet destination that’s ripe for touring is now well and truly established. But food and wine aside, it’s Tassie’s burgeoning spirits scene that’s drawing international acclaim and driving visitors to its shores.

From Southeast-Asian-inspired brunches to aesthetically pleasing cafes with a wholefoods ethos, there’s something for everyone among these 12 Hobart cafes and bakeries. Home to perhaps Australia’s highest concentration of bakeries per capita, Hobart cafes are a testament to the city’s deep appreciation for buttery carbs.

From mountain trails to historic tales, Tassie’s harbourside Hobart is a playground for all. Hobart might be on the small side when it comes to cities (population 56,000 for the City of Hobart), but it has plenty to offer. Here, in the Antarctic-facing Tassie capital, you can be up the side of a mountain in the morning, traipsing the country’s oldest suburb by midday, boating about the harbour after lunch, and wining and fine dining by evening.

From holes in the wall joints to cosy spots to linger over a flat white and a pastry, and even a scenic mountain cafe, here’s where you’ll find the best coffee in Hobart. Just like everything else that has come of age in Hobart over the past few years, the Tassie capital is well and truly in the throes of its third-wave coffee movement, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a bad brew here. Wander the CBD’s low-rise streets and you’ll find an inviting indie espresso spot in almost every direction.

Last month I had the pleasure and privilege of visiting Kangaroo Island, #SouthAustralia – a place I've been wanting to see for years. Even despite the fire scars of Black Summer it's a place you fall head over feet for. Thank you @SophieLamTravel for the commission 🙏 @Australia

A year ago, bushfires devastated 'Australia's Galapagos', but the green shoots of recovery are now tangible reports @ChloeCann https://t.co/Mo8MH8LLHn https://t.co/gi8kTZkPvK

Some of the articles I would read were aspirational, some were informative, some asked questions I wasn't brave enough to, and some just made me feel like I was understood. It is so very dispiriting to watch this industry crumble. (3/3) #Bauer https://t.co/bBlv6kpSzj

Sometimes I just wanted to gorge on beautiful images of people I didn't know with jobs that seemed unimaginable to me. Sometimes I dived into articles that enlarged my world view well beyond anything I ever learnt in the classroom. (2/3)
