Her right to a naked ankle is, in the end, the hill Natalie Ormond is willing to die on. Ormond, a millennial, simply cannot – will not – get her head around gen Z’s fondness for a crew sock, pulled up over gym leggings or skimming bare legs, brazenly extending over the ankle towards the lower calf. “I stand by trainer socks and I won’t budge,” says the 43-year-old.

‘Since becoming a mum, even the most basic level of self-care requires military level planning’ …Composite: Guardian Design; Pekic/Getty Images; Finch; Habitica; Ahead; Pokémon SleepThe other night, I didn’t moisturise before bed. The baby had just woken and was crying for a feed. I didn’t want him to wake the toddler he shares a room with, and I couldn’t, in that intensely fraught moment, locate my Elizabeth Arden. We all find it hard, at times, to fit in self-care.

The other night, I didn’t moisturise before bed. The baby had just woken and was crying for a feed. I didn’t want him to wake the toddler he shares a room with, and I couldn’t, in that intensely fraught moment, locate my Elizabeth Arden. We all find it hard, at times, to fit in self-care. But if there’s one thing I’ve noticed since becoming a mum of two small children, it’s that even the most basic level of personal care requires military-level planning.

I’m lying in bed, my hand on my baby son’s chest, measuring his respiratory rate. One, two, three, four. My palm rises with each breath. Five, six, seven, eight. With my other hand, I’m googling: “what is the average respiratory rate for a nine-month-old? Nine, 10, 11, 12. And then, of course, I lose count and have to start again. One, two, three, four. This goes on for another half-an-hour until I’m sure my baby is breathing normally.

‘Alexlilly1999* has left you feedback!” pings the Vinted notification. My stomach flips as the app loads and I open my review: “Quite good.” A gut punch. I sit in shock, scrutinising the words in front of me. “Good” is a bit uninspired but “quite” feels both passive-aggressive and viciously spiteful: quite good. Alexlilly1999 has also given me just four stars. It’s a lukewarm write-up considering the dress I sold them was good quality, a brilliant price and shipped quickly. I glare at the review.

Wrote about why I think secondhand overconsumption can be just as bad for us as fast fashion. https://t.co/YXAgWU8C9s

One of the maddest things I’ve written in a long time. https://t.co/JgwAhM1t78

Brilliant place to work, especially as a young journalist. And an editor who gave me my first job in journalism. I’m not sure I’d still be writing if @olyduff hadn’t taken a punt on me as an (at the time) unqualified but VERY KEEN 21-year-old. Apply!
