A documentary which showcases a heartwarming relationship between an otter and West Side man has won a prestigious national award. Billy & Molly: An Otter Love Story won the Science and Natural World award at the Royal Television Society Awards at the JW Marriott Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Tuesday. The film first aired on National Geographic on 15th November – following the life of a wild otter in need of help when it washes up on a jetty.

An isles jeweller was “really blyde” after an international superstar wore one of her creations on The One Show. Edinburgh singer-songwriter KT Tunstall, known for hits like Suddenly I See, wore a necklace made by isles jeweller Karlin Anderson on the BBC programme on Tuesday evening. “I was really blyde to get a message from KT Tunstall yesterday saying she was wearing my Flight Necklace on The One Show,” Ms Anderson told The Shetland Times.

Shaun Scott, 27, has been nominated for the 5 Star Teacher Competition at EF China –a prestigious award celebrating outstanding educators. “This recognition means so much to me, teaching in China has been an incredible journey, and I’m honoured to share my passion with students from all backgrounds,” he said.

A Lerwick swimmer took home two medals for the isles – three months after almost losing her life. Katie Bain, 24, earned two medals in the Silver City Blues Masters held in Aberdeen. She claimed a silver medal in the 50 metre freestyle and a bronze in the 50 metre butterfly in the 25-29 age group, as she is set to turn 25 in June.

Spirits were high this evening (Friday) without a breath of wind for Girlsta and Nesting’s epic Up-Helly-A’ procession. The procession, led by Guizer Jarl Scott Johnson, was met with huge cheers from both the guizers and the masses of folk who came to watch the stunning spectacle. Lerwick’s Junior Up-Helly-A’ squad left crowds in awe today (Tuesday). Junior jarl Fin Hatrick who portrayed King VI Magnus of Norway, Magnus “Lagabøte” Haakonsson – leading his squad on visits throughout Lerwick. Among the places the squad visited during the day was Sound Primary School where they entertained pupils with a cover of the Black Eyed Peas’ “I got a feeling” before heading for lunch on NorthLink. Fin told The Shetland Times the procession was the moment he was most looking forward to.

The Met Office has issued a fresh warning for both snow and ice – with strong winds also forecast. A yellow warning was put in place today and will remain valid until 12 noon tomorrow. Strong winds are also forecast for tomorrow with gusts up to 67 miles per hour expected between 8am and 9am with the speed remaining in the 60s until 7pm where it is expected to drop slightly to 58 miles per hour.
