At last year’s Independent News Sustainability Summit, attendees told us they need help navigating the ever-changing and complex policy landscape. In fact, throughout 2024, we witnessed a rise in legislation, like California’s H.R. 9495, which could have a chilling effect on our members’ essential efforts to keep their communities safe and informed.

I’ve worked on honing that superpower during my tenure at LION Publishers, in large part, because the needs of our members were greater than the resources we could offer, so we had to clearly articulate the problem and prioritize potential solutions as best we could — a scenario familiar to many independent news businesses.

What good is talking about sustainability if we don’t know which news businesses have actually achieved it? That was the premise that led to the creation of the LION Sustainability Audits and Funding program, which provides a comprehensive assessment of a news business’s strengths and opportunities, resulting in a report identifying short-, medium-, and long-term action items that will move the business closer to sustainability.

While we’ve worked hard to ensure ticket prices to LION’s 2024 Independent News Sustainability Summit are affordable for our members, we know that conference travel can get expensive. So we’re offering travel stipends to our members, specifically prioritizing Focus Members and those in our Micro-tier, to help subsidize the cost of attending the Summit. We’re awarding $600 to each attendee selected to receive a travel stipend.
