The Emporia High School softball team shut out Wichita West Friday evening, 16-0, moving to 7-14. Chloe Steele was 2-3 with three RBIs and one run scored while teammate Mackayleigh Arrington went 1-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Pitcher Alivia Barrett threw a two-hitter and notched eight strikeouts. She reached the 100-strikeout mark in 108 innings pitched. Emporia High School golfer Will Walker showed out Thursday at the Junction City Invitational, shooting 3-under over 15 holes. Walker’s score was barely eclipsed by Manhattan High School’s Charlie Haney, who also shot 3-under. A total of 104 players participated as Walker led the Spartan golf crew to a third-place finish (+14) in the 17-school event. The invitational was stopped after 15 holes due to weather.

It’s rare for three generations and then some to graduate from the same college, especially if it’s the same program. That is very unique. However, that rarity is occurring in Emporia, at the Flint Hills Technical College. Bruce Short will soon graduate from the school’s automotive maintenance technology program, as did his father and two grandfathers.

The Chase County High School 2025 Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 18 at 2 p.m. in the Chase County High School gym. The graduating class of 25 students has opted out of a guest speaker and will present a senior class video. Chase County High School principal Alberto Carrillo said the school does not offer AP classes, therefore nullifying the designation of valedictorian or salutatorian, noting that each senior holding a 4.0 GPA is eligible to speak.
