WICHITA—Local high school track and field athletes converged on Wichita State University last weekend, participating in the KSHSAA 2025 State Track and Field Championships. It was a mixed bag of results in the ICT. There were some impressive performances, along with some that fell a little short.

Unbound Gravel participant Keilara Owen was more competitor than participant last Saturday, as the 16-year-old Emporia native won the female 16-19 category in the 200-mile race. Owen placed 870 overall and posted the 100th fastest time out of all females. It took Owen a little more than 19 hours to complete the ride of 202.5 miles, cycling at 10.49 mph. She placed fifth in her age category in the 100 last year but was ready to step up to a greater challenge this year.

The players on the Emporia Energy 18U softball team didn’t waste time. The high school season just concluded, but they’re already back on the diamond. And success has come quickly. The Energy won the Hawaiian Hitfest last weekend, amassing a 5-0 record along the way, including defeats of the Viperzz 18U, 11-4, The Reapers 18U, 14-2, the Thunderz 18U, 10-4, and the OutKasts 18U, 11-4. Southern Lyon County pitching standout Adriana Weeden picked up three wins from the circle.

The Flinthills League recently rereleased its selections for the 2025 All-League Baseball and Softball teams. Several Bulldogs were chosen. BaseballJunior Wyatt Griffin, 1st-Team Pitcher: Griffin went 5-4 on the season, logging 94 strikeouts to 19 walks over 52.2 innings. He recorded an ERA of 2.791 and a WHIP of 1.481. Griffin registered a .524 batting average and OPS of 1.397 with 43 hits, four home runs and 25 RBIs in 82 plate appearances.

Former Emporia High School golfer Olivia Eckert recently finished her collegiate links career at Iowa Central Community College, exiting favorably. Eckert finished ninth at the NJCAA Division II National Tournament this month in Boone, Iowa. She was named an NJCAA DII All-American golfer and her team finished third overall. “So throughout most of the tournament, especially on the front nine, I was, ‘Well, I just got to go shoot par on a hole.
