Emporia Gazette
The Emporia Gazette is a daily publication based in Emporia, Kansas. In 1895, William Allen White acquired the newspaper for $3,000, which would be equivalent to about $85,300 today. Over the next fifty years, as its editor, he became a legendary figure in both American journalism and politics. The Gazette gained significant national recognition, especially within the Republican Party, after the release of White's editorial titled "What's the Matter With Kansas?" in 1896. This piece sharply criticized Populism and the presidential campaign of William Jennings Bryan. White also developed a close friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt, who frequently visited the White residence, known as Red Rocks, during his travels across the country.
