Emporia Gazette
The Emporia Gazette is a daily publication based in Emporia, Kansas. In 1895, William Allen White acquired the newspaper for $3,000, which would be equivalent to about $85,300 today. Over the next fifty years, as its editor, he became a legendary figure in both American journalism and politics. The Gazette gained significant national recognition, especially within the Republican Party, after the release of White's editorial titled "What's the Matter With Kansas?" in 1896. This piece sharply criticized Populism and the presidential campaign of William Jennings Bryan. White also developed a close friendship with President Theodore Roosevelt, who frequently visited the White residence, known as Red Rocks, during his travels across the country.

When I arrived as a fresh reporter at The Gazette last October, I had never even heard of Unbound Gravel. It was one of the first aspects of Emporia that people made me aware of. Those I talked with spoke of how exhilarating the race starts were, and how deeply entrenched Unbound Gravel was in the identity of the community. This weekend, I was able to finally witness Unbound Gravel for myself. It blew me away. At first, I noticed the steady increase in people.
