As a local minister for 14 years here in Sandpoint, I have had the privilege of witnessing the beauty and strength that comes from our community's faith. However, I also see the challenges we face in maintaining unity among our churches. In a world that often emphasizes division, it is crucial for us to remember the importance of unity, as taught in both the Old and New Testaments. One powerful example of unity in the Old Testament is found in the story of Nehemiah.

Summers in our region are some of the best times for playing in the woods and on the water, connecting with family and friends, and creating lifelong memories. Our family loves to camp and there are so many places to go that are either packed with people, or too remote for the average RV enthusiast to find. We love where we live and thank God often for the honor of being called to this amazing community.

Jesus used leaven several times as a parable with different meanings. First, He compared His kingdom to leaven. In Matthew 13:13, Matthew records, “Another parable He spoke to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took and hid in three measures of meal until it was all leavened." In trying to understand how leaven works, I found that it is a bacteria (yeast) that feeds on the materials in bread and grows, causing the loaf to rise.

Recently, my wife and I took a short trip to a beautiful mountain town in Washington. Great peaks, beautiful scenery, but it still pales in comparison to our beautiful land here in Bonner County. Our trip was for a pastors' retreat, and we got to meet up with roughly 40 other couples in ministry all throughout the Pacific Northwest. I am always amazed at how well most of our churches and especially the pastors in our region get along after hearing of what happens in other towns and areas like ours.
