There are not many occasions where we could say that the MVP award was split between four different athletes in Allegany County. But this past week, the Allegany County Athletic Association (ACAA) officially released their final set of All-Star nominations for this school year, with Bolivar-Richburg’s Landon Barkley and Kylee Whiting, along with Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Ryan Daciw and Hannah Powers leading the way with MVP nods in baseball and softball this past Spring.

By John Anderson/Wellsville SunMIDDLETOWN — A strange noise echoed through the school hallways in Wellsville, a loud thud with a metallic edge to it. Members of the custodial staff never looked up as they cleaned the combination of dirt, mud and sand and salt from snow off the floors on this early December day. The echo continued down toward the music rooms where Jeff Joslyn is giving music lessons after school. He continues on as if the sound was a metronome. Everyone was used to it.

MIDDLETOWN — With the Wellsville Lions bringing home not one, but two Class C New York State Champions in Xavier Scott and Kaylee Oswald, the rest of the field surrounding them were also very much in contention to claim gold of their own in Middletown this past weekend, as the home of the Middies was packed far and wide with some of the most elite talent around.

By John Anderson/Wellsville SunMIDDLETOWN — Wellsville's Xavier Scott may have been the first athlete in history to win a state title by simply winning a Friday night heat. The Wellsville junior breezed to a personal best in the New York State Track and Field Championships with a time of 14.41 at Middletown High School. When the other heats ended, Xavier's time was a half-second faster than anyone else. His veteran coach, Dean Giopulos, was stunned.
