Downtown business owner questions proposed event center, retail space

The city of Youngstown owns a small plot of grassy land on the east end of downtown at East Boardman and East Federal Streets. Next week, its Design Review Committee will on Tuesday consider plans for a new event center and retail building to go in its place. It sits smack between Youngstown Flea and Aspasia Lyras-Bernacki's Penguin City Brewing Company. "I didn't know that there was even talks of doing something on that," she told 21 News Friday.

"This is an exact three-quarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall down in Washington, D.C.", says Sandra Nugent, site manager with the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund. The replica is transported, handled and assembled under the most strict supervision and care. Nugent told 21 News that unlike other for-profit replicas, this one is wholly funded by donations. She then explained why the original architect chose to symbolize an open wound.

But for these former Realty Tower residents and survivors of last May's blast...the celebration fits. "We are still Youngstown strong," asserted former resident Tracey Winbush. Ribbon cut on new combined health facility in Warren

Thursday saw the ribbon cut at a three story building in downtown Warren. It's the home to Valley Health Services, a merger between Valley Counseling and Axess Family Services. "We particularly aim at accessibility, affordability and of comprehensive care," said VHS director Renee Klaric. The Warren offices will feature labs, screenings and immunizations, behavioral health and substance abuse services, and even family practice and dental health - along with its own pharmacy.
Four dogs rescued after owner left one starved, others neglected

Mercer County humane officer Paul Tobin says someone recently tipped him off about a Great Dane named Auggie. "(He was) extremely emaciated," said Tobin. "From what we were told...he was being kept locked in a dog crate."Tobin said the dog weighed less than 50 pounds. His investigation led to enough probable cause to seize Auggie, and rush him to emergency vet care. Following up with the owner a couple days later, Tobin learned of a Great Pyrenees and her two pups, which Auggie fathered.

Tuesday can also bring showers and a few storms as highs reach the mid 60s. After a leftover shower Wednesday, conditions will improve through next weekend with highs from the low 60s to near 70.
