Selected as The Times-Picayune All-Metro girls tennis player of the year, Holmes became a four-time LHSAA state champion when she defeated her sister, My-Linh, in the Division II state final. And it was what My-Anh did away from the court that most impressed her coach.

John Curtis will make its longest road trip yet when the Patriots open the football season in September with a game in California. Athletic directory Johnny Curtis said Wednesday the school will face Cathedral of Los Angeles on Friday, Sept. 5, in the California Classic hosted by San Juan Hills High School. The game will have a 6 p.m. New Orleans time kickoff and will be streamed live on YouTube by the John Curtis broadcast team.

Ivan Popp walked off the final green thinking he was tied for the lead. But the discovery of a scoring error afterward made the 15-year-old from Lafayette the winner the American Junior Golf Association’s New Orleans Classic on Friday at the Bayou Oaks South Course in City Park. Popp posted an 8-under 136 over 36 holes to win an AJGA event for the second time this season. He won by one stroke ahead of Jack Carter of Baton Rouge with the realization that he bogeyed No. 8 on the front nine.

Jason Templet attended LSU and planned to go into broadcast journalism. He became the station director for the student radio station. He interned for late WGNO sports director Ed Daniels. But when the Chalmette High graduate decided while still at LSU that he wanted to be a basketball coach instead, he went to then-LSU coach Trent Johnson and asked if there was anything he could do for him. Johnson said no. But he suggested that Templet begin calling high school coaches in the Baton Rouge area.

Jade Neves is an LHSAA state champion golfer from Sacred Heart whose busy time of her sports calendar begins to ramp up this week. The 15-year-old rising sophomore will compete in the 54-hole American Junior Golf Association’s New Orleans Classic that runs from Wednesday to Friday at Bayou Oaks in City Park.
