Holy Cross has hired a longtime New Orleans area track and field coach to be its next athletic director — but he will be an administrator-only at his new school. Mark Faliveno, the head track and field coach at Newman for nearly two decades, was named Wednesday as the school's new athletic director, effective immediately.

Jayce Ruiz did all he could to be at his best on the pitching mound. Unable to throw a fastball to the best of his ability because of a sore back, the Riverside junior spent some extra time in the cold tub and on the massage table so he could pitch as effectively as he could. The results showed.

The Willow School tied for the girls Class 4A team championship at the LHSAA state track and field meet and had the contributions of a seventh grader to thank for it. Emma Aldana made her state meet debut and won the distance triple when she took first place in the 800 (2:18), 1,600 (5:03) and 3,200 (11:12) meters on Saturday at LSU's Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Those individual event victories accounted for 30 of the 51 points the team scored to earn the silver team trophy.
