Taylor Allen feared she would have to miss her softball team’s playoff game because of a pregame meal that didn’t settle right. But once the game began, the Chapelle freshman showed no signs of feeling ill as the leadoff-hitting shortstop pounded out three doubles among her four hits in an 8-4 victory against No. 8 Ponchatoula on Tuesday in an LHSAA Division I select regional playoff game.

Jolie Lozano knew exactly the kind of pitch she wanted to hit when she came to bat with the bases loaded and her team losing by one run. It was the bottom of the seventh, and the Destrehan sophomore did not swing at either of the first two pitches. “She took a pitch on the outside corner that I thought she would have swung at, and then I just saw it her eyes, ‘Oh, she’s really zoned in right now,’” Destrehan coach Criag Perrier said.

Mandeville freshmen Parker Greene and Wayne Kabrich did not need to travel far when they each carded a 2-under 70 and helped the Skippers win a district golf tournament on Monday at Chateau Country Club in Kenner. But next week, their commutes will be far shorter. Mandeville will compete on its home course when it tries to qualify for the state tournament while at the Division I Region 2 tournament at Beau Chene in Mandeville.
