    ELIZABETH CITY — One sign read “Hate will not make America great” and another proclaimed “Democracy not dictatorship.” Another sign, which addressed the price of eggs, read “Eggs are so expensive because all the chickens are in Congress!”Those are examples of the messages seen on homemade signs carried by about 70 people attending last week’s “Rally for Democracy” at Waterfront Park in Elizabeth City. Janet Lauten said the grassroots rally on May 1 was organized with one goal in mind.

    By Chris Day Staff writer A national men's collegiate service organization has identified the person killed in a Sunday shooting at Elizabeth City State University as one of its own. Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship said member Isaiah Caldwell died in the incident that killed one and injured others before 11:15 a.m. during the the school's end-of-year celebration.
