HERTFORD — Anderson Clayton, leader of the state’s Democratic Party, said North Carolina was the party’s least invested in battleground state in the 2024 general election but Democratic voters still managed two major victories. “We had to fight our way in there for people to see North Carolina is worth investing in and we still were able to be the only state in the country that flipped two statewide races from red to blue last November,” she said.

Several passing motorists honked their horns in support, one passenger in a Jeep held up a rubber duck that resembled President Donald Trump and at least one offered up a crude hand gesture. That was the scene at last Saturday's "No Kings" rally at Veterans Park in downtown Elizabeth City. An estimated crowd of more than 200 people participated in the June 14 event, which was part of a national day of "No Kings" protests against the policies of the Trump administration.

On Monday June 2, the Chowan County Board of Commissioners voted to not reappoint Sherronne Battle to the Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library Board of Trustees, a seat she had held for nearly eight years.
