Former Caney City Admin Passes Away

Recently retired Caney City Administrator Kelley Zellner has passed away. The passing was confirmed by the city of Caney on its website yesterday afternoon. Before serving at Caney, Zellner was the city manager at Fort Scott, a city administrator at Fredonia, Public Works Director at Valley Center and Police Chief in Conway Springs. No funeral arrangements have been released.
Caney Looks to Tame the Lions in Bluestem

The Caney Valley Bullpups make the eighty four mile trip to Bluestem tonight to take on the Lions in doubleheader basketball action. The Lions will be playing their second game in two days; the Lady Lions defeated West Elk 41-32 last night, while the boys fell to the Patriots 48-6. The Lady Pups look to end a two game losing skid, while the guy look to extend their winning streak to three. Pre-game begins around 5:50 with the girls game at 6:00 on Greatest Hits 104.1.
D.C. Plane Crash Efforts Switch to Recovery

Efforts are switching from a rescue mission to a recovery operation in the plane crash involving American Airlines Flight 5342. Sixty four people were aboard the plane and three were in the Army helicopter, as the two collided near Reagan Washington National Airport. Both the plane and the helicopter landed in the Potomac River. Washington Fire Department Chief John Donnelly says 28 bodies have been found so far.
Former Teacher Charged with Child Pornography

A former teacher in Carl Junction, Missouri, has been arrested on charges of possession of child pornography and stalking. According to Carl Junction Police Chief Mark McCall, former junior high vocal music teacher Craig Smith was arrested as a result of an investigation into inappropriate behavior toward a student. Numerous child pornography images were allegedly found on Smith's personal and school-issued electronic devices.
Stark Revisits Bill to Exempt Nonprofits from Sales Tax

An Oklahoma Representative files legislation to provide a sales tax exemption to certain nonprofits. Marilyn Stark of Bethany has again filed House Bill 1171, which would provide a sales tax exemption to nonprofit organizations with $3 million or less in annual gross revenue. Alcohol and tobacco purchases would not be considered exempt purchases. Stark says the dollar, whether donated or provided through a grant, doesn't have the same buying power it did five years ago.

The extension of the sales tax for Coffeyville streets has passed. The vote was 1,444 in favor of the extension, with 833 voting against it. City officials say the extension will fund street improvements over the next ten years.
Bullpups Season Ends Against Council Grove

The Caney Valley Bullpups season comes to an end after a playoff loss to the Council Grove Braves 35-14. Traxcyn Garton had a rushing touchdown for the Bullpups, and Layne Denny found Ben Matthews for an 81-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter, but the combination of Luke Stewart to Landon Dody was huge for Council Grove. Ace Monihen also provided some big rushing yards for the Braves offense.
Caney Prepares For Braves.... Again

For the third season in a row, the Caney Valley Bullpups will face the Council Grove Braves in the playoffs, deafeating them 16-3 in 2022, but falling last year 32-14. Layne Denny had four touchdown passes in last weeks game against Riverton. Coach Criss Davis says the entire offense has put in tremendous work to improve that aspect of their game. The Bullpups are 4-0 at home this year. Davis says having a supportive hometown crowd has been a big boost for the team.
Caney Wins Big Over Riverton on Senior Night

Layne Denny threw for four touchdowns; three to Ben Matthews, as the Caney Valley Bullpups defeated the Riverton Rams on Senior Night 51-14. Denny also connected with Drake Roberds for a 62 yard score to go along with a 50-yard CV-TD to Matthews. Traxcyn Garton and Logan Burnett also scored for the Bullpups, who improved to 6-2 on the season.
Caney Ground Game Dominant in Victory Over Bulldogs

The Caney Valley Bullpups traveled to Galena in a battle of the Dogs and came away with a 46-12 victory. The rushing attack for the Bullpups was dominant against Galena's defense. Traxcyn Garton had fourteen carries for 224 yards and three touchdowns, while Logan Burnett added thirteen carries for 152 yards and three touchdowns. Once again, both the offensive and defensive lines played well, with the defense only giving up three yards rushing in the first half.
