PALMYRA — On a night of offensive desolation, the Fluvanna County baseball team resorted to small ball to get over the edge. The Region 3C quarterfinal between the Flucos and Broadway was still scoreless in the bottom of the eighth when Camdyn Via grounded a single up the middle to lead the inning off. Following a pitching change, Jackson Fields bunted a ball down the first base line, and reached safely after the pitcher bobbled the ball in a haste.

As the Monticello softball team led, 1-0, in the VHSL Region 3C quarterfinals, Brookville had runners on second and third with one out. With a deep fly ball likely tying the game and a base hit potentially giving the Bees the lead, Mustangs pitcher Madison Steppe induced an infield pop-up, which shortstop Willow Barr hauled in. The next batter took Steppe deep into the count, but the Hofstra commit eventually blew a fastball by her for her 13th strikeout.

In what is a very rare occurrence in the sport, the Monticello girls lacrosse team pitched a shutout in a 16-0 win over Fluvanna County on Tuesday. “Our defense is solid,” said Mustangs head coach Langley Sloan, who earned her 75th win with the Monticello program. “They are fierce, they are fast, they’ve worked really hard.”The shutout was greatly influenced by goalkeeper Alivia Harding, who has swiftly adapted to her new role.
