HOLTVILLE — The Holtville High track team recently wrapped up its 2024 season at the CIF-San Diego Section meet. With just a few athletes competing, the Viking boys placed 29th in Division III, while the girls were 15th. The event was the end of a good season for Holtville, a season that saw five school records fall along the way. “The track and field program has struggled for some time with participation, which ultimately affected (our) results,” Holtville coach Devron Gray said.

CALEXICO — The Calexico High baseball team’s season ended at home on May 18 with a 4-3 loss to La Jolla in the third round of the CIF-San Diego Section playoffs. The Bulldogs (15-12) jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first inning of the game, but were unable to hold on as the Vikings pushed across a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to get the win. Derek Carrillo took the loss for Calexico, going six innings and giving up all four runs.

CARLSBAD — The Holtville High softball team was knocked out of the first round of the playoffs last week, losing 1-0 to Carlsbad High. The Vikings (6-18-1) kept the game tied for six innings, thanks to a strong pitching effort from Brooke Strahm. Holtville had its lone hit of the game in the top of the sixth, when Kenzie Price ripped a two-out double.

CALEXICO — The Calexico High boys tennis team overcame an almost complete roster rebuild to finish this season with one of the strongest showings the program has had in a decade. The Bulldogs brought back just two players, senior Aaron Gamboa and junior Andres Rodriguez, from last year’s Imperial Valley League champions, and started the season with a squad made up mostly of freshmen, the majority of whom had never even picked up a tennis racket.

SAN DIEGO — Holtville High swimmer Aimee Montes took seventh place in the 500 freestyle at the CIF-San Diego Section swim meet held at Torrey Pines High School here recently. Montes, a junior, finished with a time of 5 minutes, 22.87 seconds, which was 13.97 seconds better than her previous personal best. The finish was Montes’ best in what was a nice day for her at the meet.
