It was the day before Game 1 against the Ottawa Senators and practice was over for the Maple Leafs. But not for Max Domi. Beginning sometime in late February, Domi began taking part in the post-practice skills sessions John Tavares had been soldiering his way through all season with Patrick O'Sullivan, the former NHLer and current Leafs development coach. This was one of those days. Domi worked on his passing. And - perhaps more importantly now with the benefit of hindsight - he worked on his shot.

TORONTO - For more than two decades since the Battle of Ontario was last played, Patrick Lalime has had to sit with the two Joe Nieuwendyk goals he believes effectively ended his time with the Ottawa Senators. Lalime was involved in all four of the memorable series between the Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs, played over a five-year period, going down as the losing goaltender in the last three of them. To this day, he can recite the details of how they went down with stunning clarity.

It was that after all that high-profile "losing" - the 21 top-10 finishes in majors since last winning one, including multiple soul-crushing misses - McIlroy pushed through a hurricane of doubts and got the job done. It wasn't always pretty, nor was it perfect, and that somehow made it feel more profound.

The opening of NHL free agency is still more than two months away, which means we don't yet have a full picture of how the landscape will look at noon ET on July 1. Some fortunes are bound to rise and fall with playoff performances. And there's plenty of time remaining for pending unrestricted free agents to negotiate a contract extension that would remove them from the open market before even officially hitting it.
