FAYETTE — This year, the 61st annual Seneca Lake Trout Derby was won on the last day of the iconic Memorial Day holiday event. If Maxwell Smart from the comedy television series “Get Smart” was describing this year’s Spring Lake Ontario Counties Trout and Salmon Derby held May 2-11, he would be claiming “Brian Klice won it by this much!” as his thumb and finger showed off a small margin. Klice, from Cuba, N.Y., was asked by Capt. Craig Hajecki and Justin Botting to go derby fishing aboard the Yankee Troller, a 36-foot Tiara that they use for chartering on Lake Ontario. On May 9, they were derby fishing out of Wilson.

Fish raised at the Salmon River Hatchery come from a variety of sources. Steelhead, chinook salmon, and coho salmon all develop from eggs taken from wild broodstock that return to the hatchery to spawn. Brown trout raised here are transferred in as fingerlings from other DEC hatcheries. Pacific salmon (Chinook and Coho) and steelhead eggs are placed in special incubators that are supplied with a constant flow of water.

NAPLES — April 1 arrived Tuesday, and we all know what that means. It’s nothing about planting roses, tilling the garden, or scouting for spring turkey season. It’s trout time, and the place to be was Naples for the 64th annual Rainbow Trout Derby. After decades of writing about this event, you’d think I would tire of driving from North Wolcott to Naples. That never happens.
