Kermit, WV (WOWK) – Blue Acre Aquaponics in Kermit, West Virginia is putting an interesting twist on agriculture in the Mountain State. Aquaponics is a blend of aquaculture and growing hydroponic plants. The lettuce heads at Blue Acre are growing resting on top of wastewater from fish at the center. While that may not sound appealing, the fish wastewater is rich in nutrients the plants need and acts as fertilizer. Using their setup, they grow a variety of lettuce and kale plants in just 40 days.

WOWK – Appalachian start gazers will be in for a treat this upcoming week, and the Lyrids meteor shower starts on April 17th and will continue until April 26th. On a typical night with a new moon, you could catch a glimpse of 15-20 meteors per hour, however some lucky stargazers could see far more. The Lyrids are known for uncommon surges of high activity. If you catch one of those surges you could spot up to 100 meteors per hour. The peak for this shower will be the night of April 21st.

WOWK – The ruby throated hummingbird’s migration will be reaching the mountain state soon. According to Wendy Perrone, the Executive Director of the Three Rivers Avian Center, the birds should start showing up in western and central parts of the region in the next few days to a week from now. To see the current hummingbird migration map click here! In West Virginia we typically only see the ruby throated hummingbird, but once in a blue moon a black throated hummingbird may wander in.
