GAFFNEY — Sheriff Steve Mueller said a new detention center in Cherokee County is long overdue, with the current jail well over capacity and suffering from chronic overcrowding. But getting a new facility, which could cost up to $90 million, is no easy task. It's been a struggle even to get County Council to show concern, Mueller said, with some past members refusing tours of the detention center.

CHESNEE — Small business owners, including Monica Skipper, are more optimistic than ever about the prospect of new growth and development in their small Upstate city. Chesnee, in northeast Spartanburg County a few miles from the North Carolina border, once thrived as a mill town. But in 1997, Reeves Brothers Inc. closed the textile mill that was built in 1910. Now, the town of just more than 1,200 is inching toward its next act.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is among the performers scheduled to take the stage at the Spartanburg Memorial Auditorium. The band visiting Hub City on April 12 for their The Farewell Tour. That's not all. Hip-hop legend Jeezy with Trap Dickey will perform his latest hits on April 18 at the same venue. Art lovers rejoice! The FR8yard hosts Art In The Yard on April 3.

SPARTANBURG — Elizabeth Boatwright Coker's writing career launched after she graduated from Converse College and moved to New York, where she joined other South Carolinians who were starting a new life. While her time in the Big Apple was brief, Coker found her voice and became an author on the New York Times Best Seller list and later inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors in recognition of her contributions to the literary world.
