ATHLETE OF THE YEARAidan ShielsMentor, seniorAmid a challenging selection year on the boys side given the depth and quality across all divisions, Shiels rendered the 2025 News-Herald boys track and field athlete of the year selection anything but. That one was easy. The Mentor senior was Division I state runner-up in the 800-meter run and anchored the Cardinals to a fourth in a red-hot D-I 4×800 final in Columbus.

Some familiar News-Herald coverage area track and field faces graced center stage to kick off the NCAA Division I outdoor national meet in Eugene, Ore. Perry graduate and Air Force freshman Brayden Richards concluded men’s decathlon June 12. Richards wound up in 18th place over the two-day competition with a score of 7,488 points. His best Day 2 placement came in javelin, the penultimate event. He uncorked a throw of 201 feet, 2 inches on his third and final attempt to take third.

Robert Knutson, Mentor: Competed in pole vault. Thomas Lodowski, University: Placed third in 800 with a 1:52.65. Kyndall McCaleb, Riverside: Placed 16th in long jump with a 21-5 1/2. Levi Mullen-Zurbrugg, Harvey: Placed 11th in shot put with a 53-11 3/4. Joseph Pecore, Geneva: Competed in pole vault.

COLUMBUS - Kirtland's Izzie Copeland, a day removed from running a confident popper on the Hornets' 4×800-meter relay that took seventh, was the lone News-Herald coverage area competitor on Day 2 of the Division III state track and field meet. Copeland was 11th in D-III 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 20.63 seconds. Trailing in last at the bell, Copeland rallied beautifully to a sub-72 split on her second half to ascend to 11th.

COLUMBUS — Euclid’s boys 4×400-meter relay was reminded time and again it must have done something transcendent to close out the Division I state track and field meet June 7. Well-wishers came rushing down to the fence to express their support. Jessica Beard, kindly assisting again this spring at state with medal presentations, was so impressed and proud of her beloved alma mater’s quartet, SHE wanted a picture with THEM to preserve the moment.
