    Shirley Ann Gilbert, age 78, of Lula, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 9, 2024. Mrs. Gilbert was born on April 30, 1946, in Gainesville, Georgia, to the late Robert and Louise Garner McCrary. She worked at Buttons and Bows Childcare Center and was a member of Bethel Tabernacle Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Gilbert; brother, Robert McCrary; sisters, Betty McCrary and Nancy McCrary.

    North American river otters are part of an amazingly diverse group of carnivores called mustelids. The group includes familiar local mammals like minks, weasels and skunks, but also ones you’ll never see in New England, like badgers, wolverines and sea otters. River otters live in ponds, streams and wetlands, and also in tidal salt marshes. They are more than 4 feet long and can weigh up to 25 pounds.

    Twice recently The Forum has sidestepped accurate reporting. Both instances involve rape. The first stated a designated sex offender "had sex with" an unconscious women. The woman, by definition of being unconscious, is not able to consent to sexual activity. She was raped. The second instance stated that a North Dakota senator traveled to "have sex with," a child among other offenses. A child, by definition, is not able to meaningfully consent to sexual activity with an adult. This, too, is rape.

    It took seven years, but a tiny remote community in the Northern Territory had a major legal win yesterday. People in the town of Santa Teresa, southeast of Alice Springs, won the right to compensation for the substandard housing they’re forced to live in. For more than five years, one resident lived without a back door. The High Court ruled their landlord, the Northern Territory government, must pay them for the “distress and disappointment” they endured as a result.
