    Counterfeit goods worth an estimated R400 million were uncovered at a freight depot in Edwin Swales, south of Durban, on Tuesday afternoon. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the discovery was made during a routine cargo profiling operation when officers flagged two suspicious containers. Netshiunda said the containers, which had been declared as furniture, were instead packed with fake designer clothing, imitation jewellery and counterfeit kitchenware.

    Two men have been arrested in connection with the murder of four people, including a 14-year-old girl, in the Mzomusha area of Dundee, KZN, on Friday evening. Police said the suspects, aged 26 and 32, were apprehended in the Dundee central business district on Sunday evening following a tip-off from a community member. Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda confirmed the arrests on Monday and said the provincial organised crime unit has taken over the investigation.

    KwaZulu-Natal has recorded the highest number of child deaths due to moderate acute malnutrition in the country, prompting growing alarm from health professionals, civil society and legislators over what is being described as a deepening humanitarian crisis. In response to parliamentary questions, the national Department of Health confirmed that between April 2017 and April 2025, 555 children under the age of five died in KZN public health facilities because of moderate acute malnutrition.

    The long-running troubles at Msunduzi Municipality’s Mountain Rise crematorium show no signs of abating, with yet another setback now stalling critical repair work. FuelTec, the company appointed to fix the nine-cubic metre gas tank at Crematorium Number Two, is demanding a 50% deposit — amounting to R312 488 — before commencing the job. The matter was tabled before the municipal Executive Committee this week.
