Driverless technology has come to downtown West Palm Beach with the debut of its new self-driving minibus making its way around CityPlace. Boca Raton-based tech company Guident debuted its autonomous bus to pick up passengers along its one-mile route connecting the West Palm Beach Brightline train station and the parking garage on Sapodilla Avenue and Hibiscus Street. The vehicle is almost driverless. A human operator on an Xbox video game controller occupied one seat on its initial run.

The eight-seat Guident minibus travels a 1-mile route from the Brightline train station to CityPlace, running along some of the city's busiest roads. Guident, a Boca Raton-based tech company, launched a self-driving, electric minibus service in downtown West Palm Beach. The minibus follows a 1-mile route connecting the Brightline station and a parking garage, operating at 5 mph and braking for cars and pedestrians.

Brightline has broken its own deadline for reviving its South Florida commuter pass, scrubbing from its website its promise to do so after receiving nearly $34 million in tax money. The for-profit passenger train company announced on Jan. 10 that it would "reintroduce" a commuter pass for passengers traveling between Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties thanks to a $33.8 million grant from the Biden administration.
