Tammy Owens-Smith was officially appointed to the Kettle Falls Planning Commission on March 21. Owens-Smith relocated to Kettle Falls a year ago and has since become an active member of the community. After applying for a position at the Kettle Falls City Hall office, she moved within the city limits and said she has enjoyed learning about the planning aspects of the job.

A task force led by the U.S. Marshals arrested a couple in Newport on Nov. 7, 2024, on felony warrants tied to alleged crimes involving minor children and illegal drugs in Stevens County. Kelsey Rodriguez-Howatt, age 30, and Kenneth Weiss, age 30, were taken into custody by the Pacific Northwest Violent Offender Task Force, (PNWVOTF) in collaboration with the Stevens County Sheriff’s Office; Spokane County Sheriff’s Office; Pend Oreille County Sheriff’s Office; and U.S. Border Patrol.

A routine traffic stop escalated into a high-speed chase on the evening of November 25, ending with a crash and the arrest of a Deer Park man on multiple charges. At approximately 8:30 p.m., a Colville Police officer identified a black 2014 Chevy Camaro with expired registration. Quick investigative work revealed the driver, later identified as 44-year-old Justin Ackaret of Deer Park, had a suspended license and was potentially violating an active domestic violence restraining order.
Distel Helps UW Finish 16th at NCAA Championships

Jamar Distel, a 2022 graduate of Riverside High School and the 2021 1A Washington State cross country champion, played a key role in helping the University of Washington men’s cross-country team secure a 16th place finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championship on November 23. The team finished with 436 points, moving up from 20th place at the 2,000 meter split, to 16th place at the finish line. Distel, finishing seventh for the Huskies, placed 236th overall with a time of 31:27.

The Colville Crimson Hawks ran at the 1A District 7 Cross Country Championships at Lakeside High School with fleet feet. The boys’ varsity qualified as a team by winning the district title, while Zadi Zier and Aurora Moore qualified for the Colville girls. They will all advance to the District 5/6 race at Apple Ridge cross country course in Yakima this Saturday.

Local Woman Pleads Guilty to Charges Related to Child’s Death

A Colville woman was sentenced to six months in jail after her 18-month-old child was killed in a house fire and later found to have methamphetamine in her system. Mariah Chavez, 45, pled guilty to charges including endangerment with a controlled substance, harassment, and domestic violence assault on October 9. The charges stemmed from a tragic house fire on March 17, located at N. Elm Street and 2nd Avenue in Colville, where Chavez’s youngest child, Cascabel, died.
